“Stop waiting for permission to be you,” is the essence of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the film adaptation of the hit musical of the same name that was inspired by the TV documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.

Jamie New is 16 and doesn’t quite fit in—instead of pursuing a ‘real’ career he dreams of becoming a drag queen. Uncertain about his future, Jamie knows one thing for sure: he is going to be a sensation. Supported by his loving mom and his amazing friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

The film will hit theaters February 26.

UK axed LGBTQ bullying projects after acknowledging that queer kids are most at risk

The UK government has cut funding to projects aimed at tackling the bullying of queer kids, reports the BBC. Correspondent Ben Hunte revealed that the government made the decision to cut funding last March, contradicting an earlier pledge to tackle the problem, which it acknowledged causes a disproportionate level of harm to LGBTQ+ youth.

In the report, Hunte speaks to the father of a bullied gay teen, who describes the decision as “a disaster” and argues that the projects are definitely needed, because the schools “just don’t have the money or skills to do it themselves”.

Anti-queer bullying remains a big problem in Britain’s schools. According to Stonewall’s most recent school report, almost half of queer pupils face bullying in schools as a result of their identity. This number shoots up to 65% for trans kids, with two out of five people in this demographic having attempted to commit suicide often as a result of bullying and lack of support.

What the battle over the queer age of consent has in common with today’s fight for equal rights

It’s been 20 years since the age of consent was finally equalised for gay and bisexual men in the UK after a bruising, years-long campaign from queer activists and a bitter, toxic debate. But is history repeating itself?

On 30 November, 2000, the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act was finally passed by the the UK government, lowering the age of consent for gay and bisexual men to 16 in England, Scotland and Wales, and 17 in Northern Ireland.

The debate surrounding the age of consent for gay and bisexual men in the UK began as early as 1957, when the Wolfenden Report first recommended that the ban on homosexuality be overturned. Crucially, that same report also recommended that the age of consent for gay and bisexual men be set at 21, a full five years later than for straight people.

A decade on, the recommendations made in that report finally made it into law in the form of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which partially decriminalised homosexuality in England and Wales. As was recommended in the Wolfenden Report, gay and bisexual men would be allowed to have sex, but only in certain circumstances – and only when they were aged over 21.
